NICHOLASVILLE, KY (July 1, 2021) – Due to heavy rain at Keene Trace – Keene Run, the final round of the inaugural Barbasol Junior Championship was canceled at 10:30 a.m. EDT. The tournament’s 36-hole scores will be listed as the official results, meaning that Preston Summerhays of Scottsdale, Arizona is the first-ever champion of the event and will receive an exemption in the PGA TOUR’s Barbasol Championship on July 15-18.

Summerhays’ winning total is his aggregate score of 133 (-11) which makes it a six-stroke margin of victory. Andrew Goodman of Norman, Oklahoma, Nicholas Gross of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, Myles Jones of Suwanee, Georgia, and Matthew Troutman of Louisville, Kentucky are the runners-up.

Summerhays has been considered one of the top junior golfers in the world in recent years, which has been highlighted by a victory in the 2019 U.S. Junior Amateur at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. He then competed in the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club where he only missed the cut by three strokes and finished with a better 36-hole score than players such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Rose.

He now will have the opportunity to compete on the professional stage once more in a couple weeks at Keene Run’s sister course, Champions Trace. This week at the Barbasol Junior Championship marked Summerhays’ first ever visit to Kentucky and now he will find himself in the Commonwealth again very shortly for that experience.

This fall, he will begin his collegiate career at Arizona State University and certainly has shown he has the potential to be a star in not only college golf but professional golf as well. His performance this week alone certainly showed that and as a result, he will forever be the first name to appear on the Cullan Brown Trophy as winner of the Barbasol Junior Championship.

The Barbasol Junior Championship, Keene Trace Golf Club and Kentucky Junior Golf extend their thanks to each player, their caddies and their families who participated in this inaugural edition of the event. Additionally, appreciation is expressed towards Junior Golf Live for their live coverage of the competition, plus all tournament partners and media members for their role in amplifying the stage at which these players could compete on.

The 2022 Barbasol Junior Championship’s dates will be confirmed later in the year, but it can be expected that the tournament will take place at roughly the same time of year in late June or early July next year.
